Shared note | Per interview with Jake, May 1990.Willie and Ray always stuck together.Ray worked in the steel Mills. Willie worked in the downtown publiclibrary, Jean thinks sweeping up. Jake had Bill and Ray stay with him tohelp them out. Uncle Willie always wore a cap like the Irish do. He would take the trainand visit Cleveland, staying with Ed and Dorothy Srpan, so he could takethe bus to the Cleveland Indians baseball games. Jean remembers Willielaying on the back bed listening to the Indians baseball games on theradio. He was never a talker. Willie would cuff Joan and Jean on thetwins and ask us to put up our "dukes" to fight. I think Jake said heboxed as a teenager. Jean doesn't remember him ever drinking. He isolatedfrom people and stuck around with Raymond. Jean thinks they were bothbackward socially. Jean does not think Willie was very intelligent. Jean remembers Uncle Willie coming to Cleveland and babysitting thetwins. Joan climbed up on the kitchen counter to get at Dorothy's stashof White Seal Whiskey (each bottle had a little carved white sealelephant hanging on a gold string from the bottle neck). Joan was tryingto empty the bottles in the sink, fell and cut her chin. Uncle Williecame and probably bandaged the chin. Joan and Jean were afraid of Williebecause he seemed to be an angry man. Jean recalls Uncle Willie as beinga short stocky man and Raymond a few inches taller and skinnier. Per letter from Frank Bowser, 3/21/96. William Stack, in his later years, worked for the Youngstown Public Library. Frank thinks he retired with asmall pension. He may have worked in the mills. Frank thinks he took careof Ray most of their adult lives. He used to love baseball and came bybus or train frequently on summer weekends to see the Indians. He wouldthen visit with Ed and Dorothy Srpan. His twin sister, Agnes Stack, died of smallpox. Per John Stack family tree by Mary Lou Bregitzer: William Francis Stackwas born on April 18, 1894 a twin. He worked for Youngstown Steel & TubeCompany and the Youngstown Public Library following retirement; nevermarried; was residing at the Diamondhead Nursing Home, North Lima justprior to his death. He died at the South Side Unit Hospital, age 84, onJunce 18, 1978 following an accidental fall trying to get out of bed. Hewas a member of St. Columba Church and is buried in Calvary Cemetery,Youngstown, section 2, lot 169. (JOHN) RAYMOND AND UNCLE WILLIE STACK per interview with Agnes Gillespie,Sept. 2000, by Jean and Joan Srpan Ag-(Raymond) He never worked. He had that disease, that one ear neverdeveloped. When they had the Depression, I don't know what they call it,but they put Bill as the head of the family to take care of Raymond. That's how they got situated. Bill never married. Did he date or anything? Ag-Nah, but he nevermarried. Was he a fighter? That why he would say, "Put up your dukes and fight?Ag-No, just an old saying, I don't know. Joan- Laura's husband is an Irishman and he says some of the same things. UNCLE WILLIE (WILLIAM STACK) AND RAYMOND (JOHN RAYMOND STACK) interviewwith Josie Traficant, Sept. 2000, by Jean and Joan Srpan Josie-They both lived with me, William and Raymond. They both lived inmy house. My brothers used to come and say, "Raymond is out theredirecting traffic. He was always directing traffic. He was nice. Theywere both nice men. They were good to me. 1/10/2002 research by Karl Bloomstein: In 1920 census revealed that fourStack brothers (all single) Joseph, William, Raymond and Earl wereboarding at a house located at 22 Myrtle Ave. Youngstown. The house wasowned by Robert Gillespie. |
