Friends received at the Dougherty Funeral Home, 3613 Euclid Ave. Services on Monday at 3 p. m. Interment at Lake View Cemetery.

Per phone conversation 3/10/96 Frank Bowser, Briget (Jet's) son . HenryCarter was anti- Catholic but not anti-religion. He belonged to aLutheran Evangelical Reformed Church that held services in German.

4/11/96 per phone conversation with Evelyn Davis Lundblad. Hen was Germanand was in the service during a war that fought the Germans. Hen couldnot stand fighting his own people, so left AWOL and changed his name.Later dog tags were issued to better track men when they went AWOL. Katecouldn't talk about many things, Evelyn thinks because she was afraid ofexposing Hen. Evelyn states that Earl Carter, Kate and Hen's child, whiledoing his genealogy, found this information out.

Per phone conversation 3/22/96 with Earl Carter. Henry was a craneoperator for Carnegie Steel in Youngstown, Ohio; the same company and jobJake Snyder, son of Jacob and Mary Stack Snyder, had but they did notknow one another yet. Henry lived in a boarding house across from Kate'scandy store. They met with Hen would stop into the store then married in1917. Kate bought a small neighborhood grocery store with the insurancemoney. She met and married Henry Carter, formerly Henness, who was bornon December 27, 1889 in Amherst OH.

Kate and Hen came to Cleveland about the same time that Net and Roy Davismoved there. 4/20/96 per Earl Carter; Kate knew that Youngstown wasdominated by steel mills, the major employer. When the mills closedbecause of strikes, all the department stores closed along with themills. Kate felt Cleveland was economically diversified with better jobopportunites.

4/20/96 Earl Carter. Hen worked for M. Cohen and Son scrap yard inCleveland until Hen retired. Mr Cohen started his business driving ahorse drawn wagon along Cleveland streets asking for scrap metal. TheCohen business grew by leaps and bounds until Mr. Cohen had a huge yardwith miles of RR track and large cranes to handle industrial steel, bought from machine shops and auto stamping scrap steel. Hen worked as acrane operator and while others were unemployed during the Depression,Hen worked full time. Copper tube extrusion was also on the grounds.

During the Depression the family always had a car, one being a Model AFord. There was always food on the table and presents, sometimes more, sometimes less, under the Christmas tree.

Jean remember "Hen" as being a delightfully kind and joyful man. Hen andKate would visit Dorothy and Ed in Cleveland. Hen was very nice andplayed and listened to the twins. He was a big, fat man, with a KrisKringle round belly, using a belt and suspenders to hold up his pants.Hen would walk outside and down the drive, show Jean and Joan how to takea cigarette paper, carefully pour the precise amount of tobacco from awoven cotten string tied bag onto the paper. Hen then licked one end ofthe paper and carefully hand rolled the cigarette, putting one endslowing and with great showmanship into his mouth, lighting, dragging andinhaling fully and totally enjoying the cigarette. Per Mary Carter, nowmarried to Earl Carter the son of Kate and Henry, she verifies from whatshe has heard in her geneology search that Hen was easily liked and nevermean.

4/11/96 per Evelyn Davis Lundblad: Hen had bleeding ulcers.

Henry and Kate retired to Miami Springs, Florida around 1952. Each summerthey would return to rent the same cottage at Euclid Beach Park. Henrywould work the summer at the same scrap yard he had left when he retired. In 1955, Per Virginia Fedorko, grand-daughter, the scrap yard onlywanted him to relieve an employees 2 week vacation, then asked to relieveanother employee's vacation, then an employee became ill and Hencontinued working. His last working day was when he died. Henry suffereda ruptured aorta, was taken to University Hospital in Cleveland, and died.

11/6/1999 per phone conversation with Mary and Earl Carter; they tracedHenry's relatives to Reckode, Germany 75 miles NE of Frankfort. Theyvisited some cousins there a few years ago who still remembered Henry andsome others going to America and writing. They send Christmas cards andkeep in touch with the German relatives now.
