Connell dies; ex-fire warden Father of attorneys was in department 43 years Thomas F. Connell, 74, who served in the Cleveland Fire Department 43 years and was chief city fire warden when he retired in 1931, died yesterday in Miami, Florida. With him at the time of his death, which came suddenly, were a son, John, Cleveland lawyer associated with the Van Sweringen interests; Chief City Fire Warden Patrick E. Barrett, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard McDonough of Washington, relatives of the wife of James C. Connell, a son, who is a former assistant county prosecutor and widely known attorney here. James Connell said he was informed his father suffered sunstroke Tuesday and had developed paralysis the following day. The elder Connell's condition was described as "satisfactory" Friday, James Connell said, but pneumonia set in Saturday. Death came at 2 yesterday morning. Mr. Connell, Barrett and John Connell left Cleveland three weeks ago for a vacation trip on which they had planned to visit a number of Florida cities. Youngest Captain Born in Cleveland in 1864, Mr. Connell was educated at the old Cathedral School and became a member of the fire department May 3, 1888. Four years later he was promoted to lieutenant and he was made a captain in 1894. He is believed to have been one of the youngest men in years and point of service ever to have been made a captain. His first assignment in the department was to No. 2 House on Champlain Street. When he became a lieutenant, he was transferred to No. 14 House on East 12th Street. He served as captain at No. 19 on East 55th Street near Superior Avenue NE. It was at that time that the family moved to 5922 Superior Avenue, where Mr. Connell lived the rest of his life. Mr. Connell was made a fire warden June 19, 1904, and became chief warden March 1, 1915. His work in the 27 years he served as a warden was mainly devoted to carrying on fire prevention campaigns, inspecting structures for fire hazards, supervising installation of gasoline storage tanks and the storage of explosives in the city. Interested in Prevention Having fought most of the great fires that occurred in his service, Mr. Connell was extremely interested in fire prevention. After the Collinwood School fire, he conducted an intensive campaign for the installation of doors that open outward in all public buildings. Mr. Connell was a lifelong friend of George Alexander Wallace, fire chief emeritus, and many friends attributed Mr. Connell's retirement from the department August 25, 1931, to the fact that his friend was no longer in active service. "I believe Tom was a little lonesome without Chief Wallace around," one of his colleagues said at the time. The two friends visited frequently since they left the department. Several years before Mr. Wallace retired, he and Mr. Connell took a trip to Ireland together. In reviewing his career in the fire department several years ago Mr. Connell said he was most proud of the fact that he was not once "up on charges" nor had he been reprimanded by a superior, and that as long as he was an officer he had never had occasion to report any man under him for misconduct. Funeral services will be held Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, East 41st Street and Superior Avenue, and will be conducted by Msgr. George F. Murphy, pastor, a boyhood classmate of Mr. Connell's at Cathedral School. In addition to his two sons, Mr. Connell is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Catherine Connors of Pontiac, Michigan, and Mrs. Mary Porter, 17702 Nottingham Road, NE, wife of Fire Lieutenant Emmett T. Porter. Obituary Name: Connell, Thomas F. Date: Mar 23 1938 Source: Cemetery record Notes: Connell: Thomas F.
