This birth certificate indicates John was 29 on April 19, 1888 when Thomas was born (indicating John's birth year as 1859, which is the same as John's own death certificate)

Cleveland Police Historical Society 06-05-01: Retired Officer C. O'Hara - researcher at Cleveland Police Museum - sent me a pic of John J. Connell. The Oath of Office says that at the time of his appointment as a patrolman John was 32 years old. Badge 144. He was born in Cleveland, OH. His former occupation was as a street car conductor; at the time of the swearing-in John J. Connell had a wife and three kids; he lived at 1222 Superior Street, Cleveland, OH (which coincides with his son's Return of a Live Birth certificate); that the date of appointment was Dec. 20, 1887; and that the cause for dismissal was that John retired on the Police Relief Roll of Nov. 2, 1904. He swore the oath on Dec. 21, 1887 before John Vanek, police secretary. (There were no stories about a police relief roll in the Plain Dealer in the editions before or after Nov. 2, 1904. However, the Metropolitan Safety Act was thrown out in court in 1903, and subsequently, the members of city police department were replaced by eligible civil service workers.)

John's son, Thomas, was also a street car conductor. His daughter Rose was a clerk for the railroad, and Rose's daughter Helen worked as a clerk for the Nickel Plate Railroad until about 1960 (when her residence was no longer listed in the Euclid City Directory).

In the 1910 Census, son Thomas lived with his father as his occupation was listed as street-car conductor. In the Cleveland city directories of 1913-1917 when Thomas lived at East 93rd and Union Avenues, Thomas is listed as having the same job.

Cleveland City Directory Residence, bet. 1886-1888, 1222 Superior. This is the second house east of Sherbrook Street, which becomes East 58th Street later. John can walk north along Sherbrook Street and walk into his mother's backyard at 20 Prosser Street. (In 1896, this address changes to 1825 Superior Avenue, and in 1912-1913, this address becomes 5809 Superior Street. Source: 1912-1913 Sanborn fire insurance maps.) 5809 Superior is but a stone's throw from his next house at 84 Lyon Street/1277 E. 60th Street.

Cuyahoga County Recorder's Office - Land Record Books John J. Connell owned the property parcel 104-15-152 (1279 East 60th Street, which is a duplex and includes 1277 East 60th Street on the north side of the building). All transactions regarding this property, however, do not go as far in the past as I would like.

Thomas F. Connell, the fire warden, lived at 5922 Superior, parcel 104-15-53 in about 1903 (per the County Recorder's old land/property maps) and his house would be facing John J. Connell's house at 1277 East 60th. There's a clear view! There is even a John Connell listed as a previous co-owner of that parcel.

Also, Joseph Adams, Rose Connell's future husband, grew up nearby on Superior at 5902 Superior. He later married Rose Connell, John J. Connell's daughter.
