Story in Nov. 1973 Cleveland Plain dealer "Judge J.C. Connell dies at 76, rites set for Saturday" Services for Judge James C. Connell, chief judge of the U.S. District Court of Northern Ohio from 1960 until 1971, when he went on senior reserve status, will be in Gesu Catholic Church, 2470 Miramar Boulevard, university Heights, at 10 a.m. Saturday. Judge Connell, who was appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to the federal bench in 1954, died Tuesday in St. Vincent Charity Hospital. His home was at 22399 Shelbourne Road, Shaker Heights. A prominent Catholic layman and outspoken foe of communism, he had served as president of the Diocesan Union of Holy Name Societies and received the National Society of Holy Mens bestowed upon him the (Blessed John) Vercelli Medal (in 1951). Pope Pius XII made him a Knight of St. Gregory in 1949. The Greater Cleveland Knights of Columbus named him their Catholic Man of the Year in 1946. His schoolmates at the old West High School of Commerce recalled him as a speedy typist and an outstanding member of the debating team. At the age of 18, in an amateur contest he tied Billy Rose's professional record by typing 106 words a minute. Judge Connell was born here Sept. 20, 1897. His father, Thomas F. Connell, was a former chief fire warden here. He grew up in the Superior Avenue-E. 55th Street area. In the old gaslight days, he earned money as a lamplighter in his neighborhood. Young Connell attended the old John Marshall Law School, and was admitted to the bar in 1918. In 1921, Judge Connell was married to the former Cecelia Marie McDonough, who survives him. His first public office was as an assistant county prosecutor, and then entered private law practice. Gov. John W. Bricker in 1941 appointed Judge Connell to the common pleas bench. Judge Connell was elected in 1942 and re-elected in 1943. He resigned from the common pleas bench to accept the lifetime federal appointment. He was sworn in Aug. 25, 1954. His appointment was hailed in November that year at a testimonial dinner by some 1,000 Clevelanders at the old Hotel Pick Carter. During his years on the bench, Judge Connell had more than his share of controversies because, as his contemporaries would point out: " He had the courage to call them as he saw them." As a common pleas judge, he levied stiff fines and prison terms against 12 United Electrical workers involved in the Fawick Airflex Co. strike in 1949. He refused to fire his secretary and confidant of many years who drew criticism from the Senate Appropriations Committee. He upheld Teamsters boss James R. Hoffa by granting a temporary injunction in 1958 to halt an election of Local 377. Survivors , besides his wife, include a son, Dr. Thomas J. an obstetrician and gynecologist on the staff of Euclid General Hospital; a grandson, two sisters, and a brother.
