Shared note

Peter (occupation: laborer) on Meadow Street in Cleveland in the 1853 City Directory; Meadow is practically across the street from the docks and the old Union Terminal that was on Front Street on the east bank of the Cuyahoga, according to the 1886 Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps

In the 1850 Census of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, Peter is seen living alone with the James Kennedy family on page 276, the 2116th family visited.

James Kennedy 44 Laborer from Ireland Mary Kennedy 33 from Ireland Ellen Kennedy 5 born in Ohio Wm. Kennedy 12 born in Ohio Dennis Harmon 35 Sailor from Ireland Daniel Harmon 21 sailor from Ireland Peter Connell 30 sailor from Ireland Robert Carr 25 sailor from Ireland Wm. Green 31 sailor from Ireland Saml. Deck 25 sailor from Ireland

However, it will probably be difficult to obtain early Cuyahoga County marriage records, as most of those are available from 1867 onwards. It is unclear whether Peter married Catherine in Ohio, in Ireland, or for that matter, in Canada. From Cathrine's 1900 Census listing on Prosser Avenue, she had been in the country since about 1845, possibly a few years before Peter arrived (?)

Nov 28th, 1890, No. 5025, City of Cleveland Death Index, Connell, Peter - 67, male, married at death, d. at Hospital for insane, Ward 27, from Ireland, d. of exhaustion/mania, doctor: J. Strong, buried at (St. John's) Woodland, Hogan: undertaker

From John J. Connell's death certificate it is CERTAIN that John J. 's parents are indeed Peter Connell and Catherine Osborne. The reason why I first chose Peter Connell as a possible father for John J. Connell, patrolman, (before getting the death certificate for John J.) is he is the only Connell in Cleveland as shown in city directories for 1855, 1861, 1862, and 1864. Peter must be the father of John J. Connell because the return of a birth for Thomas Francis Hiram Connell and his patrolman's oath of office both say John J. Connell was born in Cleveland, Ohio.

The 1881-1882 directory lists a John Connell who is a conductor, and living at 38 California, where Peter lives; 1882-1883 city directory has a John as a driver who lived at 38 California Street. The 1886 Cleveland City Directory lists John Connell as a conductor, and living at 1222 Superior - consistent with his Oath of Office for Cleveland city patrolman in 1888.
