Independence, Ohio, 18th family visited.

Shared note

I looked in the 1860 census for Independence, Ohio and I found Ultan (Ulton or Alton) and all of his siblings living with parents Thomas and Catherine. Results are as follows:

18th family visited, microfilm pages 653, 654

Thomas S. Murphy 42 Male Farmer Property worth $200 From Ireland Catherine 43 Female From Ireland Frank 16 Male New York Urban 14 Male New York Louisa 11 Female New York Florence Murphy 8 Female New York Wm. 7 Male New York Ultan (Alton) (Ulton) 1 Male Ohio

From Kathleen Johnson (descended from Paul E. Murphy, son of Urvan and Emma Murphy):

I have been able to research way back, and I mean way back,(past year 1000) on the Emma (Miller-Underhill) Murphy side.....but I've always reached a stumbling block when it comes to Thomas and Catherine Murphy. I've even traveled to Salt Lake City for help from the Latter Day Saints. They too, reached a block in trying to trace their origins in Ireland. In one of the documents they also had their names spelled as Tomas and Katherine Murphy. I think in my files, I have a 1850 New York census (Syracuse area) but it doesn't help us out much.

One of the old "stories" handed down through the generations was, as I was told from grandpa Paul Murphy, "that Thomas and Katherine were young lovers in Ireland. One was Catholic and the other Protestant, a relationship their parents forbade. Katherine was from a wealthy family and Thomas Murphy was poor. The young couple ended up eloping to America and changed Katherine's last name in someway so that her parents could not trace her.

Sounds like a familiar story or movie doesn't it ???, but this story has been in our family for generations along with some others that ended up proving true.

You see, my mom was about 10 years old when her family moved from Ohio, so she doesn't remember much from the Murphey side, but my mom's older sister by 8 years does remember. I had asked my Aunt several years ago about them and she did have some family stories, but that was not part of my main focus so I just filed it away in all my notes. I will search for my notes and then I will visit my Aunt hopefully next week so I can give you an update.

Also, I wanted to let you know that in my Grandfather Paul Murphey's notes he mentioned that Thomas Murphy and Kathleen (Please note change of name: Catherine) came from County Cork, Ireland in the early 1840's. Trade: carpenty. It also notes that the last name of Kathleen was undetermined.

This is where I always came to a dead stop and couldn't verify the accuracy of the immigration to America. But maybe with your notes from the passenger and immigration list that you provided, maybe we can make the connection. Was your information possible leads ??? Were there any exact matches ???

Also, My grandafthers notes list the names of siblings as: Will, Frank,Ultan, Luoise, and Ellen.

Also, it says that Urvan (Urban) joined the Union Army (Civil War) in 1862 at the age of 16 years. He falsified age as 18 years and served until the end of the war in 1865. Honorable discharge and not wounded during the three years in combat.

He married Emma in his late 40's....one and only marriage
